As abstraction drives a surge of innovation in the field of painting, historical terms such as Abstraction or Representation mustn’t be accepted at face value. Many of its practitioners even reject the notion that their work is abstract. These artists’ paintings treat abstraction as an assisted readymade, reanimating it rather than recapitulating its history. The result is like nothing that has come before. Bob Nickas, independent curator and author of Painting Abstraction (published this month by Phaidon), leads a discussion on contemporary painting with London artists Varda Caivano, Katy Moran and Peter Peri.
